Theme Studio: Restyle Your Whole Site, No Code, No Plugins

Changing the look of a website has always been a bigger job than it sounds. A new colour here, a different heading font there, slightly rounder corners on the buttons. Small asks on paper. In practice they usually meant a developer, a code change, and waiting for that change to go live. Or wrestling a ready-made theme that was built for everyone except you.

That is the gap our new Theme Studio closes. It is a part of Motley CMS that lets you, or a designer working for you, change how the front of your site looks and publish it yourself. No code, and no waiting for a developer to push an update live.

What it actually does

Theme Studio sits inside your admin area. You build a theme (a saved set of design choices), preview it on your real site, and publish it when you are happy.

You can change:

  • Colours across your whole palette, plus the page background.
  • Fonts, with a different font, size and colour for body text and each heading level if you want.
  • Spacing and corners, from content width down to how rounded your buttons and cards are.
  • The details: navigation bar, dropdown menus, footer, cards, and every page-builder block right down to the small pieces inside it.

There are two ways to work. You can open the tabs and adjust settings from a list. Or you can press Style the page, point at anything in the live preview, and click it to open a colour picker. The picker even tells you whether your chosen colour is easy to read against its background, which quietly keeps your site accessible.

The important part: editing never touches the live site. Everything happens in a preview. Visitors keep seeing the published version until you press Publish, so you can experiment as much as you like without anyone noticing.

The flexibility it gives you

Every site gets its own look, set by you rather than chosen from a catalogue. You can keep several themes on the go, save drafts, and clone a theme before you tinker so there is always a clean version to fall back to.

You can export a theme as a file to back it up or hand to another Motley site, and import one the same way. There is even a head start for pulling brand colours straight out of Figma. And because it only changes design, it is safe to hand to a designer without giving them the keys to your content, users or settings.

How this compares to WordPress

On WordPress, restyling a site usually means stacking things up. You pick a theme from thousands, built to suit everyone, then add a page builder like Elementor to bend it to your brand, then a few more plugins to fill the gaps. Each one adds weight, another thing to keep updated, and another potential way in for attackers.

It can work well. We build plenty of WordPress sites and it is the right call for some projects (there is a fuller view in Should You Really Use WordPress?). But the flexibility comes with a maintenance bill, and deep changes still tend to need a child theme and code.

Theme Studio takes the opposite route. There is no theme to buy, no page-builder plugin, and nothing extra to keep patched. It is built into the platform rather than bolted on. And every change you make is a saved design setting, not raw code or a script, so it adds no new way in for someone trying to break your site. That matters more than it sounds, because a lot of website "security work" is really just patching holes a platform created in the first place (more on that in The Security Spec That's Actually a WordPress Problem List).

What it won't do, on purpose

Theme Studio reskins your existing site properly. What it does not do is invent brand new page layouts or new types of content block. Building a genuinely new component is still a developer job, and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend a single tool does everything. The honest version is more useful anyway: you get real control over how your site looks, without the maintenance and risk that usually comes attached.

If you'd like to see Theme Studio in action, or you're weighing up whether a purpose-built CMS would suit your business better than the platform you're on now, get in touch. We're always happy to talk it through, no pressure either way.
