Perfume Ads Walked So AI Fever Dreams Could Run
As I sit here watching the Christmas TV ads I realise that the annual perfume ads have always been a bit… off.
Long before AI started coughing up fever dreams of cats in tuxedos playing chess on the moon, perfume commercials were already out there, living their best surrealist lives. Natalie Portman ditches her wedding in a helicopter? Sure. Brad Pitt whispers cryptic poetry to no one? Why not. Charlize Theron struts out of a pool of molten gold like it’s just her morning routine? Of course she does.
These ads weren’t selling perfume—they were peddling dreams, delusions, and possibly mild hallucinations. Looking back, it’s clear they were ahead of their time, beta-testing the kind of nonsense AI is just now learning to churn out. Dramatic, baffling, and completely untethered from reality, perfume ads didn’t just embrace weird—they built a penthouse suite in it. If AI thinks it’s leading the charge into surreal chaos, it might want to check its notes. Perfume ads have been living on that distant planet for years.
