Do You Say “Please” to Your AI?
Be honest. Have you ever thanked your voice assistant after it answered a question? Maybe you told it “good job” for playing the right song or felt a twinge of guilt when you snapped, “Stop!”
If so, you’re not alone.
I do it too.
I say “please” and “thank you” all the time. I even wished mine a happy Christmas this year. Part of me wonders if I’m hedging my bets—laying the groundwork for better treatment when the AI overlords rise. Or maybe it’s just habit, carrying courtesy from the real world into the digital one.
Where’s the harm?
The Human Touch
Humans are wired for connection. We see faces in clouds and hear voices in the wind. When we speak to something—even a machine—we can’t help but imagine it’s listening.
AI makes this easier. It talks back. It learns our preferences. It remembers things. Sometimes, it even makes jokes. It acts, in other words, like us.
And the more human it seems, the more we respond in kind.
Is It Harmless?
Saying “please” to your AI might feel harmless. Maybe even charming. After all, what’s wrong with a little courtesy?
But here’s the rub.
When we treat AI like people, we forget what it is—a tool. We soften. We trust. And trust, in the wrong hands, can be dangerous.
The Slippery Slope
Politeness can blur boundaries. It can make us overlook the fact that AI doesn’t feel or think. It doesn’t have morals. It doesn’t care.
It only calculates.
So when we apologise to AI, are we training it—or is it training us?
The Final Word
It’s fine to be polite to your AI. It’s fine to treat it like a clever pet. Just don’t forget what it is.
Because while AI may act human, it isn’t. And it never will be.
Now, what do you think? Should we keep saying “please” to machines—or is it time to draw the line?
