Do You Know Your Panda From Your Penguin?

Is your website one of those that 'just sits' there waiting for visitors?

How is that going for you?

Well, you're really not alone - the majority of website owners do.

Are you keeping your content fresh?

The crazy thing is that they have the foresight in the first place to get a great website built but it's after that when the problem arises - nothing is updated/changed/done to the site for weeks, months and even, in a lot of cases, years!

A website designer can only do so much to make a site ready for the search engines, but there's still a lot of work to do once the site has gone live and that is down to you the website owner! Don't expect to get new business just because you have a website. It just doesn't work that way.

A website is just a tool. The bottom line is that it just sits there looking lovely but, unless you are proactive, thats all it will do and ultimately you are going to be disappointed with the traffic generated.

So what do Panda's and Penguin's have to do with this?

Panda and Penguin are recent updates to Google's search algorithms which have placed a huge emphasis on fresh content and are giving extra credit to websites that are updated regularly and that people are talking about and sharing that content.

You and your business may be the most professional and authoritative in your chosen field, yet you could be overlooked because you are not keeping your content up to date and fresh.

5 free and easy ways to keep content updated and your website fresh as a daisy!

So, how can you keep your site fresh and up to date? Well there are a number of ways that you can do this but I have listed 5 ways that you can achieve this on a budget (ie £0!)

  1. Updating your sites content - This is the simplest thing that you can do and should be done routinely as a matter of course. If you havent got access to your website to make changes.
  2. FAQ section - I bet you get asked a lot of questions by your customers and prospects? Why not use those as content and actually help answer peoples questions on your site? The added bonus is that it will probably save you time in the long run saving you from having to repeatedly answer the same questions over and over!
  3. Blog section - A blog is very much the chosen method of keeping content fresh associated with a website. It's a great way of keeping customers and visitors informed of your latest news and information and can help establish your business as an authority in the eyes of the search engines. There are many different free platforms available if you haven't got a module as part of your site and they can be made to 'fit in' with your company branding etc.
  4. News section - This is very similar to the blog, but perhaps you can discuss the trade shows that you will be attending or other information that people might need to know about your next 12 months.
  5. Social Media feeds - These are a great way to keep your customers up to date in real time whilst at the same time being seen to be more approachable. Also, many platforms are now being indexed by the search engines which means that the more active you are the more chance that it will be found in the search results

It wont do it itself!

So now that you have tools available in your arsenal to improve your search engine rankings, you need to start being proactive and doing something about it because it isn't just going to happen!

Which one(s) do you think you will use?
